Survey

Dear Colleague,

The new European COST action (FP0905) ”Biosafety of forest transgenic trees: improving the scientific basis for safe tree development and implementation of EU policy directives” (http://www.cost-action-fp0905.eu/) has recently been approved.  The action fosters the development of a network of scientists with complementary skills and experience that will interpret existing and generate new biosafety knowledge. This will be used to guide the safe use and management of genetically modified trees (GMTs) in forest plantations and, at the same time, to protect forest ecosystems. A general overview of current use and research concerning GMTs at a global scale will also be provided.

To achieve the goals of the action, we are collecting information on field trials (field trial survey) and greenhouse experiments (greenhouse survey) of GMTs at a global scale. In these surveys, GMTs are defined as forest trees or non-forest trees (e.g. some fruit trees) with potential impact on forest ecosystems. We would appreciate if you could help us by providing information on field trials and / or greenhouse experiments going on in your country / institute /laboratory. It will not take a long time to fill in the forms. After collection, the information will be available on the web pages of the Action (http://www.cost-action-fp0905.eu/). We consider that the information gathered will be beneficial for all of us. This kind of up-to-date global-scale information focusing on trees is not available at present. The information will definitely improve networking within the field and also provide science-based information for political decision-makers of the field.

We greatly appreciate your contribution and look forward to hearing from you.
